In PPT97 and PPT2000 go to Format > Color sheme > Custom tab and change the background to a non-white color.

In PowerPoint 2002 go to Format > Slide Design, and in the taskbar select Color Schemes and then click on "Edit Color Schemes" at the bottom of the taskbar. Finally, change the background to a non-white color (the Custom tab will already be selected.)
